Stella Stevenson on Discovering Your Calling

Jazz vocalist, Stella Stevenson, 2016.

In 2016 I photographed Columbus-based Stella Stevenson to promote her jazz vocals. I had known her as a photographer, businesswoman and mother up to that point, but had no idea of this hidden talent. When she reached out recently for another file from the archives, it started a conversation about her transformation and how she discovered her true calling. I was so moved by her moment of clarity that I asked if I could share her story with you.

From our conversation:

I’ve been technically singing jazz for 18 years […]  never making a real effort to get local gigs […].

I’m on a website, numberonemusic.com and I get so many comments from people who are inspired by my music and thanking me for touching their lives with my music, helping them overcome a lot of difficulties in their own lives.

A friend recently started dialysis and has been in the lowest of lows lately (staying in bed most of the time, getting up only to eat and go to dialysis). I brought my recent recordings for him to listen to and I’ve seen him light up and his beautiful spirit lifted! He even got up out of bed and started playing the piano and singing the song “Smile.”

I now know my true calling…to keep pushing forward with my music even when local venues tell me no, “we only hire seasoned jazz veterans!”

She goes on to mention how one person’s journey can touch so many others and by simply following your heart, you can inspire others to take a risk and do the same. To learn more about her work and passion visit www.numberonemusic.com/stellaarejolastevenson.
