Watch When the Tree Moves, Listen When the Dog Growls
(an excerpt)
If there’s anything I’ve learned from living in rural Bengal, it’s to remain aware. Of sights, smells, sounds, and even subtle changes in weather. Perception is an ancient skill designed for survival but here I’ve realized that the higher my awareness rises of the world around me, the more it churns a world within. Perception nurtures the survival of spirit.
Though I find my heightened levels of consciousness exist merely as vapor. I feel infused with awakening for one full breath of experience, yet it trails from my lips and slips from memory by the next. (Writing is one way I try to pin these awakenings down; like a collection of iridescent wings tacked upon a page, hues quivering between rainbows as the light bends.)
