I designed a 3D virtual space to house both art ‘objects’ and real-world influences in this solo exhibition. In many ways, World Away was a response to the plethora of questions and comments I received after moving permanently to India (having come from Midwestern America, many people would simply say, ‘you live in another world’; a sentiment that inspired the exhibition’s title). In essence, this virtual reality helped me describe my present reality. Sounds, textures, and three dimensional representations describe a physical space alongside some of the artworks that I created during my transitional time.
Now, two years later, this world has been augmented with audio commentary as I look back on putting it all together. More information below:
New Art City is pleased to present MEMORY CARD, our third annual festival featuring artist interviews and guided tours of exhibitions created within the last three years, with live visual description. We will stream these tours live each day of the festival and host them in a dedicated archive after the festival ends. This process will form the groundwork for our future vision of accessibility and preservation on New Art City.
MEMORY CARD reflects on digital artifacts as portals for remembrance. Digital media moves so rapidly that often artists and curators are unable to give our work the pause and slowness it deserves. New Art City spaces remain open indefinitely in their original states and, unlike physical exhibitions, they can be edited over time. Access work is an act of care, and so is documentation. By inviting artists to return to their spaces and offer new perspectives on them, we hope to embed a future past in the living archive of New Art City which prioritizes accessibility and long term stewardship.
These interviews become sounding boards for memory, reflecting an expansive range of work by a diverse group of global artists during a period of rapid transformation in digital media. This archive captures AI investigations straddling the GAN and Stable Diffusion eras, contentious conversations surrounding NFTs and the metaverse, and an unprecedented amount of experimentation by artists with new access to strategies of installation art which remain excessively resource intensive in physical space.
