Monhegan Island

Homes on Monhegan Island, 2014

It feels like the same corners of the earth and the same collection of friends are intricately connected across the globe with invisible threads. I first visited this island in 2014 and explored as much as I could, including the local cemetery. I noticed two family names taking up a majority of the plots– one was my own maiden name and I wondered if any ancestors had once called this land ‘home’. An old photograph of the building that housed my studio on the mainland had the same surname painted on its brick facade (and if you ever followed my old blog, you might remember an old glass bottle with my family name had been discovered within the walls of the home during renovations).

When I later returned to Ohio and lodged with a friend for several weeks, one of her paintings from this enchanted place hung above the guest bed; and every time I pulled my vehicle in next to hers, I smiled to see a “Monhegan Island” bumper sticker welcoming me back.

This part of the world feels more like home than anywhere I’ve been. Big adventures lie ahead, but my heart is truly going to miss this place.
