Analog Forever

Don’t let rejection get you down…

I’m honored to be included with the Top 40 analog photographs of 2022 by Analog Forever. This is an image that was not selected for exhibition but, months later, the curator named it as something that stuck with her.

I especially want to share this because when I mentor or give portfolio reviews, I always try to give encouragement that if your submission doesn’t make the cut, that often doesn’t say a lot about your quality of work. Your art just may not be right for that one particular purpose. (Or, perhaps it would fit perfectly in with a theme but it is redundant or clashes with other images from a selection.)

Editors and curators will often say that they keep a list of artists they want to come back to at a later point in time. I do the same when it comes to people I’d like to write articles about. For instance, one of my dearest friends is someone I’ve been mentally outlining a long-form essay for over the past few years; but I haven’t yet found a platform where I feel my strong of a personal perspective would be suitable.

Looking far back in my portrait days, a film director had my name on his list but hadn’t yet reached out to me. In the meantime, he was referring me to his own colleagues which is what opened the door to me teaching at educational conferences around the country.

In short…keep going!
