I created these images in 2017, in between housing in Thailand and India. For a month I lived on the road, traveling from coast to coast, watching my life reflected back through the changing landscape. This was the experience that inspired my website title “Between These Things”.
After being separated by from most of my work during that time, I’ve just regained access to the files. I’m currently revisiting that period of transition as I review, re-edit and sequence that work. Alas, my film scans weren’t sent along in the batch, but I found a small collection I had stored online at a low resolution.
It’s clear to see that something shifted when I slowed down and held the weight of a film camera in my hands. Instead of viewing the world with my usual sense of romanticism and wonder, reality drew into focus. I found messages in the mundane, now traveling deep in Trump country through Texas and Arizona.
A deteriorating flag, two arrows pointing in opposite directions, a fence, an empty driver seat, crumbling infrastructure, an overgrown, dead-end road– none of these are intended to be a forceful political statement but, rather, are a documentation of my personal response as the country I returned to no longer felt like the country I had left.
