New Mexico Mesa

It’s been a challenging few days on the mesa. It’s time to decide if I extend my stay or move along down the road. The nights drop well below freezing and I have yet to master the flue to keep a fire going throughout the night without having to get up every hour to add more wood to the stove. This morning, I couldn’t get the flames hot enough to boil water for coffee and oatmeal, so a moderately warm breakfast had to do. The power cables to charge my laptop and phone are acting wonky and the extension cable I ran from my car to the bus isn’t doing it’s job. The solar charger I purchased before this trek did not work and had to be sent back as a return (note: read product reviews first). Each day I’ve had to trek back into Taos for charging, wifi and other services such as laundry and firewood.

On the other hand, the beauty in this place is incredible. I feel empowered by taking on this experience. I may smell of woodsmoke at all times, and toss on a cowboy hat when I can’t get a daily shampoo, but I stare up at a sky full of stars each night and am mere minutes from natural and cultural wonders. All in all, it’s quite inspiring.
